HOW THE HOST CELL ACTS AGAINST SARS COV 2?

Today I am going to talk about how our body reacts to the infection of corona virus.
To know how it enters the cell and hacks it to produce its own copy click here.
So, let’s start: -

After infecting the cells and making multiple copies, these copies moves out from the cell by exocytosis. Now when the cell gets infected the cell releases certain intermediates: -
1.The Interferon α and β which goes to the healthy alveolar cells of vicinity and this results in the release of antiviral peptides (these peptides are kind of self-defense mechanism).
2.They also release Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs are endogenous molecules that are released from damaged or dying cells and activate the innate immune system(macrophages) by interacting with pattern recognition receptors).
Now these macrophages activate the inflammatory mediators (Interleukin1, interleukin 6, TNF-α) so that they can be used to kill the virus.
They also move to the pulmonary capillaries which are just below the alveoli. This resulted in contraction of the pulmonary capillaries which kind of creates spaces in between the pulmonary capillaries.
This results in the release of the fluid from the pulmonary capillary to the interstitial spaces in between the capillary and alveolar surface which also moves inside the alveoli.
This makes a thick layer of fluid on the alveolar surface making it difficult for gas exchange which eventually results in the accumulation of CO2 and systemic acidosis. This also results in the less oxygen supply to the systemic circulation(hypoxia).
If the patient has a strong immune system, he or she can recover from this stage but if not, there is going to be a lot of health problems
The endothelial tissue has some protein called as vascular cell adhesion molecules. These captures the leucocytes like neutrophils. This results in the cytokine rush in the lungs.
These have 2 effects
This would affect vagal nerves and induce cough mechanism.
They induce Broncho-constriction.
In severe cases the cytokines may also move systemic and could result in clot formation which would be far more dangerous.
This is why we need ventilators as we would provide the patient with optimum oxygen levels directly into the pulmonary capillaries enabling the patient body to overcome the disease on its own.

Plastic Pollution: Understanding the Threat of Microplastics

Microplastics- These are the pieces of plastics that are less than 5mm in size and are present in the environment from various sources of plastics. Humans couldn’t have possibly imagined that a simple invention back in 1909, by “Leo Hendrik Baekeland” called the Bakelite (the first synthetic plastic – “phenol formaldehyde resin”), could become a threat to the environment. The commercial success of this product lead to inventions of many more plastics like LDPE, HDPE, PVC, Polystyrene etc.  After this human have accepted plastics so fast that we can easily see how dependent we have become on the plastic.  The global plastic industry in 2020 was valued at 580-billion-dollar industry. Plastics are now everywhere and in every industry. Why is plastic becoming a problem to us? There are many perspectives to this, but I will discuss 3 of them.        The non-biodegradable nature of the plastic.        Accumulation of microplastics in foo...

The story of journey and not the destination

The UPSC results are out. So many success stories are coming out from this event and every story is unique and inspiring. But out of all these, one story that grabbed my attention is a story of the person who is not an IAS yet but has secured 667 rank and is still preparing for the UPSC exam for a better rank and this years attempt will be his last attempt the 9th attempt. The story of RAM BHAJAN KUMAR, 34 years old, head constable in Delhi Police. He is a married guy and father of two daughters. While reading the story of this I was so touched and inspired that I felt like sharing it.  He has seen many economical hardships and despite of everything he wants to motivate and help people and according to him UPSC gives that platform to motivate and help people. When he got married his wife was a fifth pass, Time has passed and the best thing is she began the journey of becoming a post graduate. The kind of support and devotion this person showed towards his wife and how they both gre...

HOPE IS GREATER THAN ANYTHING

Todays blog is about the increasing suicides among students. I was reading the newspaper today and what grabbed my attention is the news that a 16 years old student has committed suicide in Kota who was preparing for her NEET Exams. This is not a single case but over 13,000 students died by in 2021 in India at the rate of more than 35 every day, a rise of 4.5% from the 12,526 deaths in 2020 with 864 out of 10,732 suicides being due to "failure in examination" according to the latest data as per NCRB’s ADSI report 2021. The question what really arises is was it a suicide or was it a murder by the expectations of society? The fact that a 16 years old has lost all the hopes from life is something we all need to think, that as a society we are failing.  What are the factors that have made this rise in suicide rates? 1. The gap between the reality and expectations has increased because of the existence of social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. We see happy faces, peop...
